“Are there people sick among you? Let them send for the priests of the Church, and let the priests pray over them anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick persons, and the Lord will raise them up. If they have committed any sins their sins will be forgiven them.” (The Letter of James 5:14-15)
The sacrament of the anointing of the sick is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. Jesus Christ showed great concern for the bodily and spiritual welfare of the sick and commanded his followers to do likewise. This sacrament may be administered by a Catholic priest (or bishop).
Who May be Anointed? A baptized Catholic whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age. This includes:
Those who are physically or mentally ill
Those preparing for surgery
Those with a terminal illness
Those of advanced age in a weakened condition
Those preparing to die
Seriously ill children (with sufficient use of reason)
Sick people who are unconscious
Who May not be Anointed? A person who is already dead. In this case, the priest may pray for the deceased person and bless the body.
A Pastoral Suggestion…. Please do not wait until the last minute to have a person anointed. It is suggested that the sick person receive the sacrament of the anointing of the sick at the beginning of any serious condition.
